Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI Policy
The World Review of Research and Innovation (WRRI), as a journal concerned with research and innovation, accepts that artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools can assist authors, reviewers and editors. This policy sets out how such tools may be used without compromising integrity, transparency, confidentiality or ethics.
1. General Principle
AI may support legitimate research and writing tasks, but it must not undermine originality, accuracy or ethical standards. Authors are fully responsible for everything in their manuscripts, whether or not AI tools were used.
2. Authorship
No AI system may be listed as an author or co-author. Only people can take responsibility for a paper's content, interpretation, ethical compliance and final approval.
3. When Disclosure Is Required
Authors must declare the use of generative AI where it contributed substantively to the paper, for instance by:
- writing significant portions of text;
- shaping or reorganising the argument;
- generating or substantially altering research content;
- producing images, figures or tables;
- contributing substantively to analysis or interpretation; or
- otherwise materially influencing the intellectual content.
The declaration should name the tool and describe how it was used.
4. Basic Language Editing
Using AI only to correct spelling, grammar, punctuation or formatting, or to make minor language improvements, does not normally need a detailed declaration, as long as the scholarly content was not generated or materially changed. Authors must still review every change.
5. Verifying AI Output
Because AI tools can produce errors and invented citations, authors must, before submission:
- check all factual claims;
- check every reference;
- check the accuracy of quotations;
- confirm that cited sources exist and say what is claimed;
- ensure that results have not been altered or misstated; and
- accept full responsibility for the final manuscript.
6. AI-Suggested References
References suggested by AI must be independently verified. Every citation must be genuine, correct and relevant; an AI tool is never itself an authoritative source.
7. Images, Data and Analysis
Any use of AI to generate or substantially modify images, figures, datasets or analytical results must be disclosed where relevant and must respect copyright, licensing, ethical and institutional requirements. AI may never be used to fabricate, falsify or deceptively manipulate data, evidence or images.
8. Reviewers
Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, data or review reports to public AI services or any tool that cannot guarantee confidentiality, and remain fully responsible for their reviews.
9. Editors
Editors must protect the confidentiality of submissions. Any AI use in editorial work must be under human control, must not expose confidential material and must never replace editorial judgement.
10. Human Accountability
All AI-assisted work requires meaningful human review. Responsibility stays with the author, reviewer or editor, never with the tool or its developer.
11. Prohibited Uses
- passing off AI-generated material as entirely human work where disclosure is required;
- fabricating or falsifying data, evidence, references or results with AI;
- deceptively manipulating images or outputs;
- including invented or unverifiable AI-generated citations;
- concealing substantive AI use;
- breaching confidentiality through AI tools; and
- any use that violates research ethics, copyright or academic norms.
Suspected misuse is investigated under the Publication Ethics policy.
12. Example Declaration
"The authors used [AI tool] to [describe the task]. All output was checked and edited by the authors, who take full responsibility for the content, accuracy and integrity of this article."
13. Decisions Remain Human
All editorial decisions at WRRI are made by human editors applying the journal's scholarly, ethical and peer-review criteria, independently of any AI use.
14. Review of This Policy
WRRI will update this policy as technology, publishing norms and legal or institutional requirements change.
